In the heart of Savannah’s Historic District, The Douglas was thoughtfully updated by a team of Lowcountry preservationists (Reggie Gibson Architects, Glenn Keyes Architects, and designer Kirby Caldwell) to honor the structure’s 1853 bones while creating spaces that encourage lingering.

Each of the Douglas’s 16 rooms has its own distinct color palette, though all nod to the building’s historic roots in a refined, understated way. Original details like Murano glass chandeliers and heart pine floors preserve the property’s sense of place, while modern comforts keep the experience feeling luxurious rather than museum-like.

Surrounded by Spanish moss-covered oak trees on Oglethorp Avenue, this boutique hotel housed in an 1853 mansion is perfectly placed in historic downtown Savannah. Outfitted by Charleston-based interior designer Kirby Caldwell, rooms feature lush details like heavy curtains, clawfoot tubs, and bed canopies, with a natural color palette of greens, whites, and browns. In the parlor and drawing room, walls are laden with carefully curated artwork and furnishings are grand, each trinket a treasure.

It was a deep, late summer afternoon when I pulled up to The Douglas in Savannah, GA. There was a line of overheated and slightly red-faced girl scouts lined up at the Juliette Gordon Low house right next to it, and as I exited the driver seat, their happy, trilling voices filled the sidewalk.

The Douglas is a new boutique hotel in Savannah that opened in August 2025. Situated in the city’s Historic District, the small hotel is tucked inside a former 1850s private residence. Behind the white facade, the interior is refurbished with a moody vintage glamour. Revolving around sage green and dusty tones, the 16 rooms are fitted with Murano chandeliers, Turkish rugs, Aesop toiletries, and Dyson hair dryers.

The Douglas debuted in July 2025 in a meticulously restored 1853 townhouse, ushering a new chapter at one of the city’s storied addresses. Heart-pine floors gleam beneath restored Murano-glass chandeliers. Stained-glass transoms filter Savannah’s languid light into soft jewel tones. A staircase curves upward like a ribbon of history.

With just sixteen rooms, this jewel box of a hotel has a quietly elegant personality underscored by interior designer Kirby Caldwell’s respect for the mansion’s original plasterwork and heart pine floors.

Savannah, Georgia, moves to its own rhythm. By design, the city’s 22 public squares act as public living rooms for upwards of 15,000 visitors a day (according to the American Planning Association), many of whom follow Savannah’s signature cobblestone lanes and cast-iron railings in search of lush, green resting places beneath Spanish-moss-bedecked live oaks.

Caldwell, who recently outfitted The Douglas boutique hotel in Savannah with a well-curated collection of pre-loved pieces, prefers shopping Monday through Thursday to avoid the weekend crowds.

I haven’t been to Savannah in over a decade, and lately I’ve been itching to return. Photos of The Douglas, a new hotel nestled within the city’s historic district, keep finding their way to me—the rooms look wonderfully stylish and cozy. Perhaps it’s time for a little southern escape…?

The Historic District is home to numerous 19th-century mansions. Yet the revived residence to boutique hotel pipeline really hasn’t taken off—yet. Occupying a restored 1853 townhouse, The Douglas brings a modern-minded approach to hospitality laced with Southern charm and an adults-only policy to protect the peace.

Over its 170-year history, the townhouse has played many roles—from a banker’s private residence and a gentlemen’s club to wartime apartments during World War II and even a Girl Scouts annex. These architectural and cultural layers informed the restoration, which was led by locally based firms Reggie Gibson Architects and Glenn Keyes Architects.

The sixteen room property in the heart of the city’s historic district quietly opened in June of this year following a two year restoration. With its James Beard-nominated chef, luxurious amenities, and a guest-only bar that rivals the best drinking spots in town, it’s primed to become one of the city’s preeminent places to stay and play.

Savannah’s backdrop of live-oak-lined squares charms at any time of the year, but there’s something particularly cozy about wintertime. The weather is generally mild, the camellias pop out to say hello with festive red and white petals, and the historic downtown lights up with seasonal fun. 

The first time I saw The Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s Island was Fourth of July weekend, 2020. Jared and I had escaped from our 800-square-foot Atlanta apartment to an airy Airbnb in Charleston for a socially distanced getaway and sanity-saving change of scenery.

Although we didn’t dine at The OD on that particular trip, I distinctly remember feeling a little entranced as I strolled by the restaurant’s beachy home on Middle Street and made a mental note to return someday.

Situated in the basement of the Douglas hotel on East Oglethorpe Avenue, Lester’s will offer a unique culinary experience focusing on seafood, particularly oysters, alongside an à la carte breakfast menu. The restaurant aims to enhance Savannah’s dining scene by providing an intimate atmosphere and a diverse range of French-inspired dishes, while details about the menu and concept will be shared closer to the opening.

Two-time James Beard Award nominee chef Jacques Larson (Wild Olive, the Obstinate Daughter, and Beardcat’s Sweet Shop) will have a new restaurant in Savannah next year.
